A pottery figure of a lady seated on a horse. This equestrian is dressed in long robes and has a mournful expression depicted on her face, sitting back in the saddle, wearing headdress and long pigtail of hair down her back, holding the reins in her left hand. The horse stands four-square with head lowered; ears pricked.

 

Chinese Sui Dynasty: Circa 581-618 AD.

 

Very Fine Condition; complete and intact: Traces of red pigment to the horse's mouth, and on the lady's legs and back: Areas of light earthy accretions remaining

Height 28.5 cms (11.2 ins).

 

Provenance: From a significant private London collection acquired 1990's-early 2000's.

 

The Sui Dynasty was a short-lived dynasty, whose attempts to reunify and rebuild China laid the foundation for the Tang Dynasty 'golden age'.
