A Late Roman redware oil lamp, Hayes type I. The discus decorated with a stylised blossom, a cross below, and grooved ridges around much of the perimeter. Solid handle to rear, and the lamp stands on a low ring base, the centre of which bears the inscribed maker's mark in the form of the Christian symbol Chi-ro.
Roman colonies of Northern Africa (Tunisia): Circa 375-450 AD.
Very Fine condition: The nozzle has been repaired with restoration mostly to the underside.
Length of lamp 11.8 cms (4.6 ins).
Provenance: Ex private collection H. L., Rhineland, since before 2000.
