The pre-Columbian culture of Michoacán, Mexico was rich and diverse, with skilled artisans, a unique architecture, and a prized economy. The people of Michoacán were known as the Purépecha, or Tarascan, and their empire was second in size only to the Aztecs. The figure is a more simplified and stylised evolution of the earlier "pretty lady" figure types.
