A pleasing but simple Roman pale orange terracotta oil lamp. Lamp type Loeschcke Type VIII, mold-made, plain concave discus, with small, central filling hole, surrounded by a narrow band of lines and grooves. Shoulder is undecorated and slightly sloping outward. Heart-shaped nozzle. Incised base ring.

NB. Not supplied with display stand.

 

Circa: Early 2nd century AD.

 

Fine condition; complete and intact with light accretions.

Length 8.5 cms (3.3 ins).

 

Provenance: From the MCF collection, Switzerland, in family possession since before 1967.

 

Compare catalogue number 101: The Cesnola Collection of Cypriot Art: Terracotta Oil Lamps. An example of a plain lamp of Loeschcke Type 8 was found in the Amathus Gate cemetery at Curium.1, Cyprus.
